Father of Modern Karate-Do • Founder of Shotokai (Shotokan)

Pen name 'Shoto' ('Pine Waves'). Personal disciple of both Azato and Itosu who introduced Karate to mainland Japan at the 1922 Tokyo Exposition. Funakoshi elevated a lethal fighting craft into an ethical spiritual discipline (Budo) centered on self-mastery, humility, and peaceful restraint: 'Karate ni sente nashi' (There is no first strike in karate). Author of 'Karate-do Kyohan' and the 'Niju Kun', he established the Shotokai association in 1936 to preserve non-competitive Budo.
