Master Genshin Hironishi (廣西 元信, 1913–1999), legally known as Motonobu Hironishi, was one of the legendary figures of the “Golden Age” of Japanese Karate-do.
In 1933, Hironishi entered the prestigious Waseda University and immediately joined its elite Karate Club, studying under Supreme Master Gichin Funakoshi.
Brotherhood with Yoshitaka Funakoshi
During the 1930s and early 1940s, Hironishi formed an unbreakable bond with Master Funakoshi’s third son, Yoshitaka (Gigō) Funakoshi. Together with Shigeru Egami, this trio formed the core engine room of Japanese karate innovation.
They overhauled traditional biomechanics, lowering stances (fudo-dachi), expanding lunging steps, creating modern high-velocity kicks (mawashi-geri, yoko-geri kekomi/keage, ushiro-geri), and formulating new combative training drills (ju-kumite and gohon/sanbon kumite). Hironishi was Yoshitaka’s preferred training partner, renowned for his iron physique, deep stance stability, and absolute mental composure.
University Leadership & Technical Codification
Following World War II, Hironishi served as Shihan (Chief Instructor) and Chief Examiner of the Chuo University Karate Club, molding generations of collegiate black belts into technical precision and martial integrity.
Hironishi authored the seminal master commentary Karate-do: Karate-do Kyohan Seikai (空手道教範正解 - The True Explanation of Karate-do Kyohan), which provided an authoritative, frame-by-frame mechanical analysis of the forms codified by Master Gichin Funakoshi. His reflections also introduced O-Sensei’s autobiographical works published by Kodansha: Karate-do: My Way of Life and Karate-do Nyumon.
Rebuilding the Shotokan Central Dojo (1976)
Following the devastation of the original Shotokan dojo in Mejiro during the 1945 wartime air raids, the Shotokai leadership dreamed of raising a permanent headquarters.
Under Master Hironishi’s executive drive, a new dedicated dojo was acquired and constructed in Kikukawa, Sumida-ku, Tokyo. On November 23, 1976, the new Central Headquarters Dojo “Shotokan” (日本空手道松濤館中央道場) was formally inaugurated, remaining to this day the global spiritual center of orthodox Shotokai.
President of Nihon Karate-do Shotokai (1981 – 1995)
After Master Shigeru Egami passed away in January 1981, Genshin Hironishi assumed the dual mantle of Chief Instructor of the Shotokan School and President of Nihon Karate-do Shotokai.
He steered the organization with uncompromising fidelity to Master Funakoshi’s spiritual ethos until 1995, resolutely shielding the art from commercial tournament corruption before passing the presidency to Jotaro Takagi. Hironishi passed away in December 1999, closing an epoch as the last surviving titan of Funakoshi’s inner circle.
