Ushiro Geri — Back Kick: Direct, Spinning & Ground Executions

Technical mechanics of Ushiro Geri (Back Kick): immense penetrating power of the heel (kakato), direct linear thrusts, spinning transitions from Zenkutsu Dachi, and execution from Nekoashi Dachi

Ushiro Geri • Back Kick

Shotokai Karate Budo • Technical Descriptions • Leg Techniques (Ashi Waza)

Ushiro Geri delivers exceptional kinetic power, derived from the direct thrust of the glutes and hamstrings combined with the unyielding density of the striking tool: the bottom of the heel (kakato).

Because it is delivered with the back turned toward the adversary, it possesses a strong element of surprise, though turning one's back carries inherent tactical risk. It can be launched directly when already turned away, or following a swift pivot, utilizing either the lead or rear leg in a manner akin to a powerful mule kick.

Technical Executions

1. Direct Ushiro Geri

From Zenkutsu Dachi, slide the forward foot back beside the rear foot to adjust distance. Lift the knee sharply to the chest and drive the heel straight backward along the midline, looking over the shoulder at the target.

The supporting leg must remain flexed until the final instant of extension to provide unshakeable rooting and thrust.

2. Spinning Ushiro Geri • Ushiro Mawashi Geri

From Zenkutsu Dachi, step the rear foot forward past the lead leg while simultaneously pivoting the hips and shoulders 180 degrees to turn the back squarely toward the opponent.

Lift the chambered knee and thrust the heel backward into the solar plexus, ribs, or groin, maintaining the same upright torso principles described above.

3. Execution from Nekoashi Dachi • Cat Stance

From Zenkutsu Dachi, draw the front foot back into Nekoashi Dachi (where the rear leg bears 90% of the weight). Pivot the body to align in profile or with the back to the adversary, lift the unweighted front leg, and drive the heel backward with rapid extension.

Target Levels

  • Chudan: Aimed at the solar plexus, floating ribs, or abdomen.
  • Jodan: Thrusting beneath the chin or into the face.
  • From the Ground: Executed from a fallen or kneeling posture upward into the groin or knee of an advancing opponent.
  • Tobi Ushiro Geri: Executed in mid-air jumping trajectory.
